Wearing shoes before turning one

I've bought a nice pair of new shoes for Eryn but old folks are telling me that I shouldn't let Eryn wear shoes before she turns one. Why? I wouldn't know. So, my mum suggested that I celebrate Eryn's chinese birthday in order to let her wear her proper pair of shoes!

I've heard of this old folk's belief, but anyone know what the reason behind this superstitious belief?

Here's more videos of Eryn, trying to grab the camera from mummy!

Old folk tales say baby will fall a lot if they wear shoes before one year old. The thoery is true to certain extent coz wearing shoes during the wobbly stage might restrict their balancing.

Eryn is very cute in the video clips! She can walk quite fast too!

Heard this too but don't know the reason, perhaps Jefferene is right lar!

wow eryn can walk before one! cool...

Not quite sure where that superstition came from. Once toddlers start walking, they should really be fitted with proper shoes ... ie get their feet measured and choose the right type of shoes. It's better to have shoes once they start walking. Pre walkers don't need shoes and because babies bones are so soft, it's better to leave bare footed coz hard shoes can mis-shapen the feet and restrict growth.
Not sure which shops in Malaysia do shoe fitting. In the UK, Clarks do a good range for all shapes and sizes.

Jefferene, Eryn can already run. Thus my concern in getting her to wear her shoes whenever we go out. :-)

Jesslyn, Eryn walks faster than Brendan. In fact, her milestones are faster as well.

Dear anonymous friend, unfortunately, it's not easy getting babies feet measured and I can say that almost all parents in Malaysia buy their children's shoes from the shops without customising the fit to the feet.

oo itu macam huh...hmm first time i hear.

so any party for the big day?

Really? I haven't heard of this one before. Anyway, before they're one the shoes are merely for decorative purposes only and they don't really need it.

Hehehe. Looks like we're online at the same time. I post comment only to find you and jazzmint there too!

Jazzmint, not big plans for party, though I wish we're having one. Must ask hubby again :P We're having our own family celebration in Langkawi though :-)

mumsgather, I've not heard of it as well until Brendan started walking, but he officially walked around 13 months old. Now that Eryn is walking much earlier, I'm relooking at that superstitious claim again. hmm...... next time we must go online via msn together :-)

I haven't heard of this one too..

Since Zara started walking about 9mths+, I did let her put on a pair of shoes when I brought her out soon after that esp if I knew we would let her wobbled a bit on her own.

heard about it but we didn't really practice it. In Malaysia there is Clark which measure your baby/toddler legs but it won't be cheap...

hah? I thought Chinese believe the girls have to bind their leg early, not meh? hehehe... kidding, but really never hear of this old folk tale.

Waliao... Eryn walks so fast!!! where was she rushing to?

Wear before 1 will make them don't know how to walk, but since Eryn can walk already so no problem la...

zara's mama, I believe a good fit should be ok isn't it? :-)

Chanel, I don't think Clarks in Malaysia actually specialises in measuring babies' feet anyway.

Maria, Bind their feet? At this era? chan lor.... Eryn is always rushing here and there. She's gonna be a 100m sprinter next time.

Hui Sia, is that the 'rational'?
